I’m happy to say the Autumn Lily Quilt Top is complete!!
This quilt was almost the death of me …. I’m just kidding …. but ….. I will say the next time I mess up a quilt top I’m gonna donate it to charity!
Here’s the rest of the story ……
A typical Jelly Roll Race Quilt is made by opening the Jelly Roll and you sew the strips together. My first one turned out beautifully …. so I assumed they all would…. that is not the case!! See picture below (when you compare the top picture with this one … Holy Cow!).
Since I did not like the look of it … I decided to order another Jelly Roll and this time I would place the fabric where I wanted (see picture below).
It was going to be a beauty!! I could just tell by the picture directly above.
Until I forgot to cut 18″ off the end of the 1600 strip. When someone says “this is the most important step” they are not joking!!
I was sick …. how could I mess up another one … of the same fabric? In my defense there is a lot going on in this house and to say I’m overwhelmed is an understatement (lane swerve here … .. Brooke is not moving out after all … Thank God!!).
After throwing a small fit … I decided I’d just start cutting and see what I could come up with …. it too was not working …. I did not take pictures … it was too awful to share.
The next day it hit me …. make those strips smaller and tear about the first quilt I made and combine the two…. are you cracking up? I’m not sure how I pulled it off …but the end result is beautiful.
I have a habit of saying things that either annoy people or make them laugh (Laura keeps saying I need to start a list and give them a name…maybe one day) … so here it goes … while making this quilt I seriously wanted to give up … as we often do when things don’t go right …but I stuck with it and as usual it was worth the pain. I’m being a little dramatic but … often times things that bring us pain on the front side … end up being worth it in the long run.
I can’t wait to get this one back from the longarm quilter!
See ya!

Angie even if you did make a tiny mistake–you did a little thinking and your tiny mistake became a masterpiece . I think you did a wonderful job. Like what you did–I found a quilt store and planning on checking it out soon. Have a good day.

What a beautiful result! But pretty please, show us that first picture of the quilt after that first cut. It would be a good visual to show why we need to cut off those first 18 inches. It’s definitely the kind of mistake I would make, I make my biggest goof-ups with sewing!

hey Cindy, I didn’t take a picture of the mess up …but I will tell you what it does. If you fail to cut off the 18″ at the end … all the seams will be almost in the exact same place … on each row. It’s not a pretty sight! Thanks!!

It’s beautiful…question, I’m not a quilter (yet)…what is a longarm quilter? And did you find out any test results? Praying for you!
angie says
Hi Liz, a longarm quilter is someone that finishes the quilt. I take her my quilt top and backing fabric and she attaches them together with the batting and adds the quilt pattern. (She also does the binding for me.) I have not found out the results yet …but they told me it would take a while. Thanks!!!

Well that was a “happy accident!”
BTW I have followed your blog almost since the day you started it, when my demonstrater shared it with me. I am now also fervently praying for you and speak from experience, when I say that the joyful side of health issues is the rich closeness of knowing you are in the hands of the Master. Then comes the miracle change, that through your suffering you have emerged strong and mysteriously

BTW I have followed your blog almost since the day you started it, when my demonstrater shared it with me. I am now also fervently praying for you. I saw a bumper sticker the other day that said, “REAL success is achieving HEAVEN.” With that in mind we are being pruned and watered every day to glorify Him. I thank you for your lovely ministry on this earth.
