Ambleside Quilt WIP

April 19, 2015 by Angie 2 Comments

I worked all day yesterday creating and filming projects … two for Chic n Scratch and two for Chic n Clique …. since I reached my goal for the day I decided to reward myself with some sewing/quilting.

I didn’t make a lot of progress …. but I’m happy with the results I have so far.

Here’s the details ….

When I was at Prairie Point Quilt Shop I bought two Fat Quarter bundles of the Ambleside Fabric.   My thoughts were …..  I would make a quilt with the first bundle and then offer a quilt along for the 2nd.

I do not have a pattern …. I decided that I will design this one myself and we’ll keep our fingers crossed it turns out okay.   My first instinct is to make a Ambleside Jelly Roll Quilt ….but …. I need to learn and grow as a quilter.

The Fat Quarter Bundle included 8 fat quarters of the same fabric line ….. I choose five of them to start with and I cut 5 rectangles that measure 5 x 10 out of each fat quarter.

Next I placed them on my design wall … and proceeded to move them around until I found a pattern I liked.

Next up ….. I need to decide if I want to make the quilt larger … or keep it on the small side.  I have enough fabric to add a sixth row … but will I?  And I have the other three fat quarters that I could use to make it wider as well … decisions!!

Next … I need to decide what size sashing to use … I could go easy on myself and use a Jelly Roll and I’m leaning towards that.   But I wish there were larger precuts because by the time you sew the 2-1/2 strip on … it’s only 2″.  I’d like it to be 3″  🙂

The last decision I need to make is … do I make the sashing larger on the top, bottom and sides?  Again the Jelly Roll strips are easy but I would like a big border (like four or five inches).

Here’s the pattern so far …

Brooke and I are headed to our first Royals game of the Season … lets pray the rain and thunderstorms hold off until after the game (and we’re hoping for win!!).

See ya!

p.s. WIP means work in progress

Layer Cake Quilt 1 Pattern

January 15, 2015 by Angie Leave a Comment

The quilt I made daddy was designed on a piece of paper (love my notepads from Ikea).

And I tried to create a pattern for everyone using Pages on a Mac …. and although I love Pages and my Mac … it was NOT working.

So, I broke down and bought the software  … Electric Quilt 7 …. I still think it’s a bit much for me and my simple quilting …but it allows me to see what the quilt will look like …. before I begin.

For example … if I had drawn the Layer Cake Quilt instead of flying by the seat of my seats I would have alternated rows…. I think.  I’ve completed the first diagram ….but …. what if I change it around … will I like it more or less?  Because I’m a visual person I really don’t know until I see it.

The picture below is diagram one … and just as soon as I get diagram two complete I’ll share it.  I’m thinking that row two and every other row will be switched.  Special Note:  This diagram only shows four patterns of fabric … but in fact it uses every single pattern of fabric in a Layer Cake.  (It was much easier using three instead of 10.)

How do I word this?   On Row Two ….  I’ll start with block two instead of block one … but in my experience .. or I should say lack of experience … I’ve found making changes sometimes creates a new issue.

Gott run ….. I have a doctors appointment today  and another one as soon as I can see the Rheumatologist (waiting on them to call me).  That’s about all I know right now  … when I know I’ll be sure to let you know.

See ya!

Layer Cake Quilt #1 Diagram

Quick post for you today ….. I only worked for about an hour today …. (too much pain to do much else .. even my elbows hurt).

So, I decided to draw a diagram of daddy’s quilt (also known as Layer Cake Quilt #1)…so that I can make another one…. one day!

This is as far as I got and ran out of space.

His quilt is 5 rows across and 8 rows down … for a total of 40 Blocks. (You get 42 Layer Cakes in a pack.)  My diagram is 5 rows across and only 4 rows down … I need to fit 4 more rows … meaning I need to make the spaces smaller … but then my eyes can’t see it very well.

Oh well, I’ll think on it and see what I can come up with.  I could just say repeat pattern until you have a total of 8 rows doing down (sounds good to me!).

I’m using Pages on a Mac  … I could buy a software for designing quilts …but I’m not interested in using a PC …. so I’ll do it the hard way.  It’s not hard … it’s just my lines are not completely straight.

See ya!

Hello and welcome to my website. In the papercrafting world I'm known as Chic n Scratch and here on this site you can expect to see a hodge podge of things ...but primarily sewing and quilting.
