My picture today is not very exciting …. but … I have committed to re-organizing our house in 2015.
My goal is to spend at least one to two hours per week.
I’ve made a lot of progress … in some areas … and every time I start to organize my old fabric I decide the job is too big and I move on to something else. Plus organizing my old fabric isn’t near as exciting as playing (organizing) my pre-cut fabric (currently stashed in my dining room … some in my computer cabinet and some in my rolling cart from Ikea).
So … my picture is attempt number three to get some kind of system (for my old fabric) I have more …. not shown in the picture.
Here are some of my issues:
- I want to keep all the fabric organized by color (green, pink, blue, brown).
- I want to keep all the fabric designs together (for example all the Blush Fabric).
- Fat Quarters, Layer Cakes, Jelly Rolls, etc (different sizes)
- Xmas Fabric
- Baby Fabric
- Flannel
- Kits (I can safely say I’m done with buying quilt kits …. I’ve bought several through the years and never made a single one)
I have all the Fat Quarters in the plastic container … eventually it will be organized by color!
As I’m typing this I can feel myself back pedaling … do I really want to tackle this beast?
I’m pretty sure I do …. so maybe next week I’ll share the end result … and if you don’t see anything …. just know that I’ll revisit it again in 2015.
See ya!
p.s. If you quilt or sew … how do you organize your fabric?

I have sewn for many, many years. The closest I have come to organizing my fabric is keeping all fabric , lining, notions for one project in a plastic bag. I have many, many plastic bags all ready to go. I have lots of wool, gabardine, crepe for suits (I used to wear to work), all tucked away in their plastic bags. For some reason, the only thing I have organized by color is thread — usually what is left over after doing a project. I have a lot of “silky” prints for dresses/blouses also tucked away in their bags — I have not made or worn a dress since I moved to Las Vegas 9 years ago. I know this doesn’t help your organization project, but at least you know you are not alone. Now, I find myself using plastic bags for my quilting fabric, thread, etc. that seems to be appearing out of nowhere. For paper crafting, my cardstock and ink pads are all organized by color.

Joann, can you believe I gave up again? Maybe later in the year…. or what I may do is give some of it away. Thanks for sharing with us!

I used to sew all the time, you got me inspired to do the layer cake which I never quilt in my life. After watching the videos you got me going again. My sewing machine works just fine after about 10 yrs. or so. So right now I don’t have a stash of fabric, I’m sure it won’t take long. Thanks for all your cards and quilt videos.

I was just thinking isn’t it amazing all of the connections one can make with the power of the Internet world..sharing all sorts of your paper crafting and quilting ideas and the many people that have decided to dust off supplies and dive in. I know it sounds mushy and all but, sometimes it’s just so much fun sharing and learning with everyone from all over the US and beyond.

Hi Angie,
I sort all my Christmas fabrics in one bin, batting in another. Any projects I have fabric, pattern and notions in clear shoe boxes on a shelf in my workroom. I pick my top 10-15 projects for the shoeboxes. All other fabrics are sorted by projects in larger bins. I fold them all pretty like at the shops, more inviting that way. I have a small scrap collection in case I want to appliqué, sorted by colour. I’m in the process of downsizing my fabric stash as I have had some projects for over ten years and I seem to gravitate towards the new ones. I use all clear bins so it’s easy for me to quickly find what I’m looking for! Good luck on the organizing, it seems to be an ongoing task.
