Quilt Photography

My picture today is of Brooke taking pictures of Daddy’s quilt … before it was shipped out.  We’re still playing around with what’s the best way to photograph a quilt …. especially in the winter!

Daddy’s birthday is Sunday and we wrapped this up just in the nick of time!

As I said last week Brooke’s major is photography and she hasn’t chosen what kind of photography … but in the meantime she can help me.   She’s taken Christmas card pictures for some of our neighbors  ….  and a twins baptism ….  we’ve got a little investment in cameras, backdrops and lights!!

I’m not sure what the final picture looks like … since I’ve been sick I’ve not done much of anything (other than laying on the couch).  I’ll try to post the final pictures sometime later this week.

See ya!

Sick as a dog

February 23, 2015 by Angie 10 Comments

I haven’t posted in a few days because I’m sick as a dog!!

All the medicine on my sick tray is what I’ve tried over the course of the past few days … plus the meds they prescribed me today.

Sick tray is a cookie sheet covered with a TEKLA Dish towel.

I haven’t stamped or touched my sewing machine in almost a week… insert sad face!!

So … I had two choices today

  1. Post nothing
  2. Post about my health/ my trip to the walk in clinic

I decided I would post about my health …who knows it may help someone because I learned a lesson today!

It started late on Wednesday with a sore throat … it was just scratchy for a few days .. on Friday it became worse and all of a sudden I was wheezing …but … how could I wheeze when I didn’t have a cough … in the past wheezing has always followed a few days of coughing.

When I talked to my sister on the phone (on Saturday) … she said you need to go go the walk in clinic.  Long story short I did not.  Big mistake!! Saturday and Sunday night … zero sleep and I mean zero!!!!

I was counting the hours until 8am when my doctors office opened so that I could call and make an appointment.  Well, guess what … she didn’t work today.  So I got dressed real quick and drove to the walk in clinic as fast as possible.

The lesson learned was next time go when your sister tells you.   In my defense I don’t like going to the walk in clinic because it exposes you to so many more germs.  When I see my doctor there’s a few people in the waiting room … walk in clinic there’s a ton of people and the wait is long!!!

My oxygen level was low … I was wheezing like crazy and I have a nasty cough (and a man voice).  They instantly gave me a breathing treatment.  Checked me for strep and the flu …both were negative.  I have bronchitis (sadly I’ve had it more times than I can count).

Fast forward six hours later … I feel worse ….but like my sister said… it will take the medicine a few days to start working.  The doctor also said if I’m not feeling better in three days to come back.

I hope all of you stay healthy …. It’s been a crazy winter!!

See ya!

p.s. If I don’t post tomorrow …. you’ll know I’m still feeling really yucky.

Fabric Scraps

My picture today is of the fabric I trimmed off my 8-1/2 blocks ….. and now they all  measure 7-1/2 inches.   (I’m speaking of the Lulu Roses Butterfly Quilt).

Brooke is working on taking pictures of Chase’s quilt tomorrow so I should be able to share them soon …. and although I messed up in more than one spot … the quilt looks really nice!

When I went to bed last night I had a scratchy throat …. and today I woke up with a full fledge sore throat …. I’m drinking lots of liquids … taking it easy and I hope and pray the sore throat is gone when I wake up tomorrow!!  (I’m also taking Zicam.)

See ya!

How to photograph a quilt

How to photograph a quilt … is the subject of the day!!

I’ll start off by saying that I’m no expert …but by the time I finish my research I will be (plus my daughter is going to help me… thanks Brooke!!)

Both pictures were taken with a  Nikon D7000 with a 50mm Prime Lens (we took the f-stop as far as it would go on the D7000).

We were going for the blurred background look … but our lighting wasn’t working because the sun only came out for a few minutes.  We have studio lights … but not the right background.

Our next test will be using a gray screen using a Nikon D90 or Nikon D5100 …not sure of the lens yet.

As soon as we figure out the best camera and the best set up …we will share the details.

This may be the time to chime in and say Brooke’s major is in Photography at the Kansas City Art Institute …  but …  I personally take all my pictures.   I finally broke down and ask Brooke if she could help me master quilt photography (and I’m happy to say she said yes …plus she can include them in her portfolio).

I’ve read several articles on how to photograph quilts …. but none of them really explained how to hang the quilts temporarily.  I don’t want to add a rod pocket because I’m not entering them in a show … I just want a really nice picture for my blog and my scrapbook.  Plus most of these quilts are gifts for my family (long distance) and who knows when I’ll see them again.

As for hanging it on a tree or on a fence … it’s winter here in Kansas and the only way you can get me to walk in that snowy backyard is if I had to rescue Miss Bella!!

See ya!

p.s. I’m getting Chase’s quilt from the long arm quilter tomorrow … if my memory serves me right  … you have not seen his quilt.
