Sewing Supplies

Here’s a list of items you need to get started quilting:

I’ve added a link to Amazon for most of the items … the link will take you to what I use …but you may be able to find the product cheaper at one of your local stores.  For example the Creative Grid ruler I use … is about 8 dollars cheaper at my local store.

  • Sewing Machine
  • Rotary Cutter
  • Self Healing Cutting Mat
  • Ruler
  • Scissors
  • Thread
  • Seam Ripper
  • Quilting Pins
  • Pin Cushion
  • 1/4 Foot with guide is most helpful but not necessary
  • Iron
  • Ironing pad or board
  • Clear Starch
  • Fabric

On the video below I show you each of these items.  If you’re viewing this in your email please visit my site to watch the video.

Sewing Machines

I currently have three sewing machines …

  1. Bernina Aurora 440 Quilters Edition
  2. Bernina Activa 230
  3. Juki TL-2010Q

Now for some history on my sewing machines…. I started with a Viking and it was a great starter machine.  But once I heard a Bernina ….. I was sold….. the machine purrs!!   (Not everyone is bothered by smells and sounds … if that’s the case any machine will do.)

My main machine is the Bernina Quilters Edition  …..  the Activa 230 is the machine I keep at the lake house (and will travel with it … it has it’s very own suitcase on wheels) and the Juki is my latest machine for super fast sewing.  It’s a simple machine and very easy to understand … it lacks a lot of bells and whistles which equals less confusion … if you know what I mean.

My Viking machine is currently living with my sister Kim ….  in the hopes that I can get her to quilt!!

If you are just getting started … my advice is start with a machine you can afford … you may fall in love or you may hate sewing.  I never regretted buying the Viking it was truly a great machine and at the time in my budget.    Another tip is look for sales … when I bought my Activa 230 …. it was on sale (I received a post card in the mail and it was perfect timing).

My favorite places to shop online for fabric and quilting supplies …..

  • Fat Quarter Shop
  • Missouri Quilt
  • Hancocks of Paducah
  • Amazon

See ya!

p.s. I’ve received some requests for purses …. and I will add it to my list of possibilities …but … a few years back I contacted two different ladies about me filming a video using their pattern (that I purchased) and they both said NO.  In my opinion it would have probably sold a lot of their patterns …but their fear was that since my video demonstrated how to make it … they would lose sales on selling their pattern.   Long story short … I’m not in a position that I can create my own patterns (it takes me a lot of trials  …. and errors to get it right) but …. if I find someone that has patterns and they’re okay with me filming a video …. I’d be happy to do so!!

Jelly Roll Quilt Video

To make the Jelly Roll Quilt you need:

  • One Jelly Roll (40 strips of fabric that measure 2.5 x 44)
  • Matching Thread (you need two full bobbins)
  • Scissors
  • Sewing Machine

The Jelly Roll Quilts measure approximately 54 x 64.

To finish the quilt:

  • Buy the backing fabric and binding fabric
  • Take to longarm quilter

The fabric I used was Miss Kate by Moda Fabric.

I purchase my fabric online at two places … and locally at two places.

  • Fat Quarter Shop
  • Missouri Quilt Company
  • Prairie Point Quilt Shop
  • Quilters Haven

I’ll share a picture once I get it from the longarm quilter.

I am working on a video of all the supplies you need to get started with quilting (later this week).

See ya!

p.s. My assistant is working on an instruction sheet for the quilt … I’ll update this post when it’s ready.

Jelly Roll Quilt

CherishNatureJellyRollQuilt

My picture today is of my every first Jelly Roll Quilt … it’s technically called a Jelly Roll Race Quilt but since I’m not racing anyone it seems kinda weird to call it that.

I used the Deb Strain Cherish Nature by Moda Fabric on my first Jelly Roll Quilt and I followed the instructions exactly … but on the rest thereafter I made small changes each time.  (I’ve had that Jelly Roll for over four years … it was on my shelf waiting for me to use it. It’s no longer available … yes I googled it.)

I’m happy to say I’ve filmed a video on how to make the quilt top … it took a couple days and a couple different cameras (iPad on one side of the room and camera on the other) … it’s not the best video I’ve  produced but I think it explains it very simply (no shortcuts).  I’ll be posting the video over on Chic n Scratch because that is the channel where I have all my videos ….but I’ll link it over here as well.

I started with the Jelly Roll Quilt because you can get it done in less than four hours (and you don’t have to get up from your sewing machine unless you want to).  But I will warn you of one thing … be mindful of the Jelly Roll you purchase!  In fact go ahead and buy your backing fabric right then and there!  You’ll need 4.5 yards if you use the same fabric for your backing and binding.  If you’re not using the same you’ll need 4.25 for backing and 1/2 yard for binding …. to be safe.

In the papercrafting industry things come and go but they’re usually around for a while … with fabric …  it’s almost impossible to find it once it’s gone.  If you like it …buy it and don’t hesitate or it will be gone.   The Mixed Bag Quilt from last week … I am faced with that dilemma …. the yardage fabric is gone and finding a red to match the red is not an easy task!  I bought two of those Layer Cakes …. so now I’m faced with what do I do?  (I have an idea …but we shall see.)

I have several Jelly Roll quilts to share with you …because they are quick and simple …. meaning once you are at the sewing machine you never have to get up.  But they won’t be totally finished until I get them back from my longarm quilter (so you’ll see them again).

I will try to get the video posted later today.

See ya!

How to block event invites on Facebook

January 24, 2015 by Angie 2 Comments

I love Facebook …. seriously I do …… as well as my friends … but the event invites that come across my phone in the middle of the night are driving me crazy! My iPhone is set up to turn off sounds …. but I don’t turn everything off because my children may need me.  Plus my sister was in a really bad car wreck on Christmas Eve (many years ago) and I did not know until the next morning because the phones were off … I’ll never do that again!

And lets admit it .. there are some people that invite you to everything …..I’m not sure if it’s intentional of if they’re not aware of what they are doing …anyway I decided to fix it when I got up this morning.

So, here ya go ….,,

1.  Click on Privacy Shortcuts (upper right corner … notice the lock).

2.  Click on See More Settings (at the bottom … in bold font)

3.  Click on Blocking

ClickonBlocking

4.  Add friends name to Block Event Invites (this makes me feel bad to actually type a friends name …but at the same time the phone beside my bed glowing like a beacon at 2am justifies it.)

blockeventinvites

You can also Block Games (It’s actually called Block Apps) on that same page (I’m happy to say I get very few of them now).

If you’re not on Facebook I hope I haven’t scared you off …. I really do love it …but there are parts that are very annoying … but there’s usually always a fix …. you just gotta find it!

See ya!

p.s. I may have failed to say this but when you block someone … they are not aware of it (thank goodness) …. meaning Facebook does not send them a notice.
