The Jelly Roll Race Quilt Along Video 4 is ready.

Ambleside by Moda Fabric

  • One Jelly Roll (40 strips that measure 2-1/2 x 44)
  • 4-1/2 Yards of Backing Fabric
  • 1/2 Yard of Binding Fabric
  • Quilt measures:  54 x 63

In Video #4:

  1. Now that our quilt  top is complete we need to check it for holes and trim all the threads.
  2. Measure for backing and binding fabric using the Robert Kaufmann Quilting Calculator (app on iPhone).
  3. Press your Quilt and use Starch.
  4. Take the Quilt Top, Backing Fabric, Binding Fabric to a long arm quilter to complete.
  5. Optional:  If you want a label on the back of your quilt, also take it to the long arm quilter.

Here’s a picture of the quilt … please ignore the wrinkles!  I did not have time to iron this round of quilts … next time I will be sure to take pictures before I wash them.

    Hi Angie,
I agree, I think it depends on the style of fabric too. I also would like to know is do you choose the type of quilting pattern or does your long arm quilter choose that ? I have been sending mine to Missouri Star and I always choose the swirls. I was wondering what the quilting looks like in different patterns. on solid backings you can see them but with pattern backings it’s hard to see them.
Anyway your quilts always look pretty. I think I will let them do my binding also. I really don’t like doing that. I finished a Christmas quilt and I think it turned out pretty but now I’m dreading the binding.
Thanks for sharing your time and talent.

      Hi Lesa,
I let my long arm quilter decide the pattern … she has been doing it for many years and I figure she knows best. I just tell her when the quilt is for a man so that she doesn’t do flowers or butterflies.
I have never attempted binding since Shirley does it for me …but I may give it a try during the Christmas break. Thanks!!
