Serger Quilt

June 29, 2016 by Angie 2 Comments

Last week I purchased a Juki Serger MO 654DE and I decided to make a Serger Quilt the minute it arrived.   (Yes, I wanted the Bernina serger but I needed to make sure it was a machine that I would use.)

Juki serger

Here’s the story ….

I made this Serger Quilt by watching about ten different videos….. none of the instructions were helpful in all areas of the quilt so I had to search.  By the end of the quilt …. I had made so many changes it’s safe to say it’s my doing (does that make sense?).

Serger-Quilt-Flat

I used my Juki Serger and a Walking Foot with my Bernina.  You can make this quilt without a Serger but you must have a Walking Foot because the layers are thick!

I cut two strips each of five designs that measure 6 (or 6-1/2) x WOF (WOF is width of fabric).  Then I cut 8 strips of White Fabric by the same measurements.

Serger-Quilt-Start

I serged the strips together with the batting and the back fabric … stitched in the ditch … and then I stitch to the left and the right of seam.  Just typing all that sounds so confusing … which is why I will film a video!  For my benefit and yours 🙂

This was my first very attempt at binding and now I know why I pay my long arm quilter to do it for me!!  I am determined to master it~

Serger-Quilt-

Now for some honestly … I need to go to cutting fabric school!  I don’t like cutting strips of fabric that exceed my cutting mat because I  never cut straight.   So …. I have an idea on how to change this quilt …. by using smaller pieces of fabric.  I will play with that on vacation!!

Serger-Quilt-Complete

This quilt measures 36 x 51 and it’s the perfect size for a child!

Gotta run … we leave for vacation in a few days and I have a million things to do!!

p.s. I re-read my post … I think I’m a little scattered today 🙂

Daysail Jelly Roll Quilt

June 24, 2016 by Angie 4 Comments

I have another Jelly Roll Quilt to share with you and this one was for my Aunt Cecilia.

Day Sail Jelly Roll Quilt

I called her this past winter and ask for her favorite colors …. which was Red, Blue and White.

Next I called my sister Kim and we both got on the Missouri Quilt Company and the Fat Quarter Shop websites and starting looking at fabric (she’s in Tennessee, I’m in Kansas but we made it work).

We looked for an hour and finally determined that the Daysail by Bonnie & Camille for Moda Fabrics would be perfect.  The funny thing is at the time I thought it’s nice but not my colors … boy was I wrong.  Once it was finished I’m wishing I had made one for me too (for the lakehouse).

It’s been a couple months since my last post ….   between Dave’s surgeries and mine … Brooke’s graduation, our trip (then jetlag), etc … lets just say I feel like I’m on a fast moving roller coaster and every day zooms right past me.

I’m sewing a little … but not a lot.  Most of the quilts I’m going to share with you over the next month were the ones I made last fall/winter for my family (family quilts for 2015 has carried over to 2016 as the list grew).  I shared most of the quilt tops and now I need to share the finished product.

I hope you’re all doing well!

Color Theory – 56 Blocks Quilt

April 25, 2016 by Angie 1 Comment

Color Theory – 56 Blocks Quilt
Color Theory Moda Fabric

Our next quilt along will more than likely be in June  …. but in between now and then I need to do a Quilt Test (I always make one or two before we do a Quilt Along).

I’m thinking the Color Theory by Vanessa Christenson of V and Co for Moda Fabrics is going to be my test quilt and if it all works out …. I’ll choose another fabric line for the actual Quilt Along.

I’m only sharing my thinking process today.

Thoughts ….

  • 1 Yard each of five patterns of fabric ….. I’m going monochromatic this time.
  • Each block will  measure ???? Still thinking … leaning towards 8-1/2 x 8-1/2.
  • 7 Blocks across and  8 Blocks down will equal 56 Blocks (so I’m thinking I’ll be calling it my 56 Blocks Quilt).

Fabric ….

  1. Pattern one:  14 Blocks
  2. Pattern two:  10 Blocks
  3. Pattern three:  13 Blocks
  4. Pattern four:  9 Blocks
  5. Pattern Five:  10 Blocks

Again … all of these are my thoughts … but here is my template for the square placement.

Lulu Roses Quilt Along Video #5

  1.  Set your seams and press them.  Press your seams to the dark side.
  2.  Place row 2 right sides together to row 1, pin it and sew with a 1/4 seam.
  3. Repeat with rows 3 & 4, 5 & 6 and then add row 7 at the end.  Once you’ve sewn all two rows together then sew all of them together.
  4. Add sashing to the left of row 1, pin and sew it.
  5. Add sashing to the top of the Quilt and the bottom, pin and sew it with a 1/4 seam.
  6. Measure your quilt for the Backing Fabric, Batting and Binding Fabric.

Lulu-Roses-Quilt-along-complete

It measures 59 x 67 and will need 4-5/8 yards of Backing Fabric (& Batting) and 1/2 yard of fabric for the Binding.

Next up … I’ll be taking it to my longarm quilter to finish!
