How to measure a Quilt for the Longarm Quilter

October 2, 2016 by Angie Leave a Comment

How to measure a Quilt for the Longarm Quilter
How to measure quilt for longarm quilter

I’ve got a video for you on how to prepare your quilt for a longarm quilter.

Here are the steps:

  1. Trim all lose threads
  2. Press and Starch quilt top and flatten seams (you may want to do this step after you’ve measured so that you don’t wrinkle it).
  3. If the edges are unraveling – baste 1/8″ around entire quilt top.
  4. Measure the width and length of the Quilt Top.
  5. Use the Robert Kaufman app to determine your backing fabric.  Ask  your longarm quilter how much overage they need for the backing fabric.  (Mine needs 2″ overage but my mid arm quilting machine needs 8″ … the average is between 4″ – 6″.)
  6. Use the Robert Kaufman app to figure out  your binding fabric.  My longarm quilters needs 2″ overage … check with yours to determine how much you need.
  7. If your longarm quilter does  not provide the batting you’ll need the same amount of Batting as your backing fabric.

If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact me.

See ya!

Halloween Bricks Quilt

October 1, 2016 by Angie 5 Comments

My next quilt is going to be my first Halloween Quilt.

The fabric I’m using is ….

Lost & Found Halloween Fat Quarter Bundle
My Mind’s Eye for Riley Blake Designs

And I purchased the Bundle at Fat Quarter Shop.  If you click on the name above it will take you to their online store.

lost and found halloween

I’m using 7 Fat Quarters and a White Jelly Roll.

The pattern will be the Brick Quilt and I’ll make it exactly as the one I shared in April 2015  … the Ambleside Quilt.  (It will not be the same quilt in my Bricks Quilt Along.)

If I make the quilt without any changes …. here’s the details ….

  • Quilt measures:  47 x 72
  • Fabric needed:  7 Fat Quarters & White Jelly Roll + backing and binding fabric
  • 7 rectangles/blocks across –  6 rectangles/blocks down.
  • 7 patterns of fabric – you need 6 rectangles of each pattern.
  • Each Rectangle measures:  5 x 10
  • Attach a white 2-1/2 x 5 rectangle to the bottom of each 5 x 10 rectangle.
  • 20 Sashing Strips (I used White Jelly Roll Strips)
Special Notes
  • Attach a 2-1/2 x 5 white strip to the bottom of each rectangle (except bottom row – that will be a long sashing strip)
  • If you can find 8 Fat Quarters you like … feel free to make it wider (I may do this myself).

Baby Quilt Along

I’m sorry I left you hanging with the Baby Quilt!!  I will try to get it wrapped up in the next two weeks.

If I told you all the things that we’ve been dealing with in the past two months you would not believe me!  I’ll just say I somehow have managed to keep my head above water and I thank God!  Plus I know that things could be worse so I choose to focus on the positive!

On top of all the medical stuff  – I had some business goals I was reaching for by year end,  which was yesterday (Sept 30th).  I’m happy to say I reached my goal of promoting to Platinum and I’m happy with my year end numbers.  My goal for 2016 was to help my team promote and I have even bigger plans for them in 2017!!

Couch to Quilt

I received my Missouri Star Quilt Co 2016 Holiday Catalog yesterday and found something interesting!!!  It’s called Couch to Quilt and they have a box that includes everything to make your first quilt …. it even includes the longarm quilting!    I ordered it today to try it out.  Click here for all the details.

See ya!

How to make a Baby Quilt

To make the Baby Quilt you will need the following:

  • Layer Cake or Fat Quarters with 6 Patterns
  • If you use a Layer Cake … you want one that has two of each pattern
  • 1 Charm Pack (solid color that coordinates) I’ll be using White
  • Backing Fabric – 2-1/2 yards
  • Binding Fabric – 1/3 yard
  • Matching Thread
  • I will have my quilt finished by my longarm quilter and she provides the batting.
  • Basic Sewing supplies (scissors, sewing machine, etc)

The Fabric I’m using is Dream and a Wish Sandra Workman Designs by Riley Blake and I’ve placed them from dark to light …. for the ombre effect.

Here’s some more info about the Baby Quilt

  • Measures 40 x 40
  • Total 81 Blocks
  • Blocks measure 5 x 5
  • Quilt is:  9 Blocks Across and 9 Blocks Down

I’ve already made this quilt using Pink …. and I’ll be using Blue for the Quilt Along.

If you would like to make your quilt larger all you need to do is buy more Fat Quarters and add more rows.

I’ve decided to make another Fat Quarter Quilt …. using another color … will share pictures soon!
