Lulu Roses Quilt Along

March 20, 2016 by Angie Leave a Comment

To make the Lulu Roses Quilt you will need the following:

  • 1/2 yard of fabric of 7 Patterns
  • 1 Jelly Roll – that coordinates with your fabric
  • Backing Fabric – 4-5/8 yards (more if you make a larger quilt)
  • Binding Fabric – 1/2 yard
  • Matching Thread
  • I will have my quilt finished by my longarm quilter and she provides the batting.
  • Basic Sewing supplies (scissors, sewing machine, etc)

The Fabric I’m using is Lulu Roses by Tanya Whelan for Free Spirit.

Here’s some more info about the Lulu Roses Quilt

  • Measures 59 x 67
  • Total 56 Blocks
  • Blocks measure 6-1/2 x 6-1/2
  • Quilt is:  7 Blocks Across and 8 Blocks Down
  • 49 White Strips measure 2-1/2 x 6-1/2
  • Sashing – 20 Strips
  • The picture I’ve provided shows a larger quilt (9 blocks across and 8 down) but we are making a smaller size to allow us to complete it in the next 6 weeks.

I’m providing a written tutorial that will follow along our Quilt Along.  We may or may not make some modifications at the end.

Click here to download and print the tutorial.

How much fabric do you need for 56 Blocks?

  • It depends on how many patterns of fabric you buy.  You can get 12 squares out of  a 1/2 yard of fabric.    I went with 7 patterns … 8 blocks each of 7 patterns for a total of 56.
  • Another option would be 5 Patterns of fabric – But you would need to buy more than 1/2 yard (I would buy a whole yard to be safe).

I’ll be back later today with the First Video on how to make the Lulu Roses Quilt.

Raw Edge Squares Quilt #3

Raw Edges Square Quilt –  Quilt Along  Video 3

  • Make sure the grain of fabric in each square is going in the same direction.  Please see video for a better explanation!  Your seams will line up a lot better if you do this step.
  • Start with row one and place block one to block two with the right sides facing together and sew a 1/4 seam (I back stitch).
  • Repeat with all the rows.
  • Press the seams, it’s your decision … you can press them open or you can alternate each row and press them it to the left on one row and press it to the right on the next row.  Alternate each row if you press them to the left or right.
  • Take row one and row two and place them right sides together, line up the seams and pin.
  • Sew it at a 1/4 seam.  Repeat the same with row three and four and five and six.

  • Open Layer Cake and place the Squares on your Design Wall (you can use the floor or a bed).
  • Place Charm squares on the Layer Cake Squares.
  • Label each row.  You will  have 6 blocks across and 7 blocks down.
  • Use Glue Stick and add Charm Square to the middle of the Layer Cake Square.  You can use the Five & Dime Ruler by Kansas Troubles Quilters.
  • Sew a 1/4 seam on every charm square.

Raw Edges Square Quilt – Quilt Along

Raw Edges Squares Quilt

To make the Raw Edges Square Quilt you will need the following:

  • One Layer Cake
  • One Charm Pack
  • One Mini Charm Pack
  • The Layer Cake, Charm Pack and Mini Charm Pack are all of the same fabric line
  • Backing Fabric – 4-1/2 yard
  • Binding Fabric – 1/2 yard
  • Matching Thread
  • Glue Stick
  • I will have my quilt finished by my long arm quilter and she provides the batting.

I’m using Prairie Corey Yoder of Little Miss Shabby by Moda Fabric.

My first Raw Edges Square Quilt was made with Ambleside.

Quilt measures:   55 x 65

  • Use a table or the floor and lay out all 42 Charm Squares.
  • Place one Mini Charm Square on top of all 42 Charm Squares.
  • Optional: you can decide your vertical rows at this point … just remember to number them!
  • Once  you’re happy with the placement, use a Glue Stick and attach the Mini Charm to the Charm Square and sew along the edge of the Mini Charm with a 1/4 seam.

I found this Quilt Pattern over on Moda Bake Shop and the original name is Scruffily Quilt by Rachel Griffith.  I’ve made some changes to the pattern … but not enough to say this is my original idea.  I have a feeling we may be making more quilts from the Moda Bake Shop  website … they have some pretty awesome tutorials!
